Travelers of the Month: Dena M. and Kali H!

Names: Dena M. and Kali H.

City, State: Little Rock, AR

Specialties: ICU

Month: April

1. How did you get into travel nursing?

Dena: The need to explore is what convinced me to start travel nursing. I had talked to a couple of travelers at my 1st nursing job and they seemed to LOVE it. I thought it was something that would fit me and give me all the adventures I was looking for and get me out to the west coast where I always wanted to be.

Kali: My friend, and July 2020’s traveler of the month, Emily! We were roommates in Pittsburgh for a few years when she took a travel assignment in San Diego. After hearing about how much she loved it, I stayed a little while longer in Pittsburgh to get some more ICU experience and then joined Em in San Diego!

2. What’s the best part about traveling?

Dena: Getting to meet new people and fully immersing yourself in a new location. I’ve made friends from all over, and have gotten to truly know cities more than I ever thought I would, being from such a small town.

Kali: Meeting new people and getting to explore so many new places with them. I have friends all over the country and it’s awesome to be able to have someone to visit in so many cities. I love really getting to know a city more than just your typical touristy places that you get to see on a weekend visit.

3. You meet a first-time traveler in the Little Rock area, which restaurant is a must for them to try?

Dena: HAM! It’s a butcher shop with reallllly good sandwiches! everything is super fresh, they use local ingredients, and even sell eggs from local kids to help support their baseball teams. I’ve definitely been here the most. Also, Mylo Coffee. Really great coffee and pastries. Super cute on the inside, and a vibe.

Kali: Raduno! I’ve been for brunch and it was outstanding. They have a brunch cocktail flight which was super fun. They are known for their pizza too but I haven’t tried it (yet).

4. What’s the best part about the Little Rock area?

Dena: All the outdoor activities! Hiking, fishing, biking, and kayaking. Tons of lakes and rivers around to explore.

Kali: The proximity to so many state parks and hiking! I was pleasantly surprised when I learned how many waterfalls Arkansas has.

5. Any advice for other travelers?

Dena: Get to know people and make friends at each assignment, but don’t be afraid to go out by yourself!. Some of my best memories from travel nursing are days that I went out by myself to a new restaurant, a hike, or just picking a neighborhood in a new city and making it a mission to explore every shop or store.

Kali: Don’t be shy in orientation! That’s your best opportunity to make friends to go exploring with!

6. What do you like best about working with Axis?

Dena: I love how responsive and thorough each person on the Axis team is. Any question that I have, regardless of how ridiculous (and I have my fair share of those) is answered completely and in a way that makes sense to me. It feels more individualized instead of just being another box to check.

Kali: Honestly Lynna. Everyone that I’ve ever worked with at Axis has always been outstanding, but Lynna has put up with me for years now and still actively chooses to not only be my recruiter, but also my friend. She’s absolutely one of a kind both on and off the job and there will never be enough words to explain how incredible of a human being she is. I answered the phone years ago from a Seattle number thinking it was a travel interview and it turned out to be another pesky recruiter (Lynna), and I am so forever grateful that I was stuck in traffic and decided to hear her out that day.

Congrats Dena and Kali! We’re so glad you joined the Axis team! 🙂
