Axis Traveler of the Month Jared Randall
We love celebrating the travelers who make a difference both on and off the job. This month, we’re recognizing Jared Randall, one of our cath lab travelers who took a chance on travel nursing to grow professionally, explore new places and step outside his comfort zone.
From challenging cardiovascular cases to cycling around Charleston, SC, he’s making the most of every assignment.
Getting Started With Travel Nursing
Ready to step outside his comfort zone, Jared decided it was time to leave his hometown and experience something new, both personally and professionally. As a cath lab nurse, he knew that working in different hospitals would expose him to new physicians, techniques, technologies and patient populations. Each experience offered another opportunity to learn, adapt and become a stronger clinician.
Of course, the chance to explore new places was a pretty great bonus. He has always loved traveling and discovering new cities and cultures. His plan? Keep exploring until he finds that one place he falls in love with enough to put down roots.
Calling Charleston Home
His current assignment brought him to Charleston, SC, a city that has quickly made an impression. With its Southern charm, beautiful waterfront views, nearby beaches and incredible restaurant scene, Charleston offers plenty to explore. He especially appreciates the city’s active lifestyle, with people running, cycling, walking their dogs and finding every excuse to spend time outdoors.
Between Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island, the cobblestone streets and the city’s lively nightlife, there is never a shortage of things to do. And then there’s the food. He might need an entirely separate interview to cover all of Charleston’s restaurants, but it’s safe to say the local food scene has been a highlight!
For someone who enjoys fitness, outdoor adventures and exploring new places, Charleston has been a pretty great place to land. It’s also set the bar high for wherever his next assignment takes him.
The Most Rewarding Part of Travel Nursing
One of the biggest rewards of travel nursing has been learning to walk into an unfamiliar cath lab, work alongside a new team and gradually earn everyone’s trust. Every facility has its own routines, personalities and ways of doing things. Learning to adapt, build professional relationships and become someone the team can count on has been a rewarding part of the experience. But above all, it’s the patients who make the work meaningful.
In the cath lab, the impact of the team’s work can be immediate. Patients may arrive during one of the most frightening moments of their lives, and the right care can dramatically change the course of their outcome. Being able to watch those patients recover and return home to their families is something that never gets old.
His current facility has also provided opportunities to work with complex cases that require critical thinking, adaptability, teamwork and experience with a range of cardiovascular procedures and technologies. He started travel nursing with the goal of becoming a better clinician, and experiences like these have confirmed that he made the right decision.
Making the Most of Every Assignment
When he’s not working, you’ll probably find him doing something active. Fitness is a big part of his life, from strength training and cardio to cycling and exploring the city on foot. He’s also gotten involved with a local cycling club and spends time at a Brazilian jiu-jitsu gym.
Outside the gym, he enjoys fishing, hunting and spending time on the water. Living along the South Carolina coast certainly makes those hobbies a little easier to enjoy. For Jared, one of the best parts of travel nursing is having an entirely new place to explore with every assignment. Rather than simply going to work and heading home, he makes an effort to experience everything his temporary home has to offer.
How He Found Axis Medical Staffing
This might be our favorite part of his story. When he decided to pursue travel nursing, he (humorously) did what any modern professional might do… he asked ChatGPT.
He searched for the best travel nursing agencies based on traveler reviews and employee satisfaction, and Axis Medical came up at the top of his results for his specialty. So, he decided to give Axis a call. That’s when he connected with his recruiter, Kylee. The two hit it off, Kylee helped him get started and the rest is history!
His Advice for Other Travel Nurses
His advice for nurses considering travel is simple: Don’t be afraid to get uncomfortable.
He believes that many of life’s best opportunities are waiting on the other side of the discomfort we try to avoid. Whether that means leaving your hometown, starting over somewhere new or walking into an unfamiliar hospital, growth rarely happens when everything feels comfortable and predictable. Travel nursing will challenge you, but those challenges are also what make the experience so rewarding.
He also emphasizes the importance of staying humble and being willing to learn. No matter how much experience you have, there is always another nurse, physician, technologist or patient who can teach you something new. The moment you decide you’ve learned everything is the moment you stop growing.
His advice? Take the assignment. Explore the city. Meet new people. Learn everything you can. You might discover that the opportunity you were most hesitant to pursue becomes one of the best decisions you’ve ever made.
