Traveler of the Month: Abby Just

Meet Abby Just our Traveler of the Month for May 2023! Each month, we take time to recognize one of our Axis Rock Stars that have exceeded expectations by going above and beyond every day for their patients, coworkers and the families they wonk with. Abby is currently working as a PCU Nurse in Nashville, TN; A destination she is extremely fond of!

Let’s dive in and get to know Abby a little better!

What’s a piece of advice you’d give to a new travel nurse?

A great benefit of travel nursing is that you have a prime opportunity to constantly meet new friends and explore new places. It’s a great community to lean on to. My advice to anyone that is considering a traveling career is to be up for a challenge and be open to constantly learning new ways of working! You’ve got to be prepared to potentially jump into a fast-paced line of work and take on new tasks with a willingness to be all hands-on deck.

Tell us about a humbling experience you’ve had traveling.

One aspect that has been extremely humbling to me while on assignment is being a source of comfort for patients and their families that are in hospice care. I know how precious and emotional those moments are and to be pulled aside and told how much that means by my patients’ families just proves I am in the career that is perfect for me.

What do you love most about Nashville?

I am a huge live music fan and when I’m with friends I enjoy Broadway and finding local shows! You will hardly ever find me sitting down. I love being busy and going out and about to discover new places. I love checking out the local shops here in Nashville and a few of my favorite restaurants; Hattie B’s and Taco Momma. I may not be a coffee drinker, but you can catch me at Dutch Bros trying out their energy drinks!

Is there anything you wish you knew about traveling  before you started your first assignment?

When starting a career in travel healthcare, it can be a bit overwhelming to know where to start your search and know if jumping into the field is the right move. Some travelers make travel healthcare seem intimidating and that there is a connotation that travelers will be expected to take on difficult tasks more often than permanent staff, but I have not found this to be true in my experience and I wish I would have realized this sooner to ease some of that initial stress.

How do you unwind after a long shift?

The best way for me to relax and reset after a long shift is to put the day into perspective kind of like visualizing the closing of a book. I try my best not to bring the hard days home with me. I am lucky to have family and friends to lean on and reset my mind after a long day. I am also an avid gym goer and I avoid missing any days! This has been a great way for me to reset my mental health!

What do you like best about working with Axis?

Before officially joining the Axis team, I was first blown away by the reviews not only on their social media and Google pages but by word of mouth across various Facebook Groups. From there, I went to the Axis website and submitted my information to get in contact with an Axis Recruiter. Alex was the only recruiter from various companies that made me feel like a priority, searching for jobs that fit what I was looking for and even considered helping me while having a pending license.
