Bend’s unique landscape is the main draw for both residents and tourists. The town has earned a reputation as “the outdoor playground of the west” and it’s pretty easy to see why. Where else do you have unspoiled access to world class skiing, climbing, and fishing within a 50-mile radius?

Mt. Bachelor Resort is the place for downhill skiing, with 101 established runs and 4300 acres of fresh powder. Or, grab your tube and head to the Snowblast Tubing Park, where you can race your friends down the hill using one of six groomed runs. Rachel Scdoris, who finished her first Iditarod race in 2006, owns and operates this business with her team of dogs, and takes patrons on a one hour sled tour through the wilderness.

When the winter begins to thaw, Bend pivots to spring and summer recreation. Bend is home to world-class whitewater rafting, with several rivers in the area to choose from. Sun Country Tours offers guided excursions with all of the necessary gear provided for you. One of the most popular options is the Big Eddy Thriller, which features mild to moderate rapids, and is perfect for beginning thrill-seekers. Bend also has it’s own whitewater rapids park right in downtown! The park is great for tubes, kayaks, and even paddleboards. It lets you to satisfy your craving for whitewater, without even having to leave the city! If rapids aren’t for you, there are several lakes that are ideal for canoeing and paddleboarding as well. Mirror Pond in Downtown Bend is a popular floating spot for locals.

The summers in Bend are usually sunny, warm, and perfect for hiking, swimming, and rock climbing. Bend is a premier destination for rock climbing, with Smith Rock State Park just a half hour away. Smith Rock attracts climbers from around the world, and even if you’re not into climbing yourself, it’s fun to watch other climbers scale the rock. There’s also opportunities for bouldering, hiking, and picnicking within the state park. Road cycling, and mountain biking, are also very popular during the summer months. There are miles of paved and unpaved trails throughout Bend, and Mt. Bachelor offers exceptional mountain biking, ranging from novice to expert courses.

All that physical activity can really work up an appetite. Luckily, Bend has a wide array of dining options to keep your stomach happy. McKay Cottage Restaurant is a neighborhood brunch place that’s been a staple in Bend since 2006. Known as “the best breakfast in Central Oregon,” they have specialties like sweet potato and chorizo hash, and fresh Strawberry crepes! For dinner, you can’t go wrong with one of the town’s many brewpubs, but for something unique, try Spork a Mexican-Asian fusion joint. Joolz is another highly-rated option, with locally-sourced Middle-Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine.

Did I mention the brewpubs? Bend has more breweries per capita than any other city in Oregon (including Portland). With 22 different breweries to choose from, it’s no wonder Bend has been dubbed “Beer Town USA.” Some of the local favorites include Deschutes Brewery, Boneyard Brewing, and Crux Fermentation Project. The Bend Ale Trail is a must-do for anyone who claims to be a connoisseur. You can download your Ale Trail Passport online, or pick one up at any of the participating breweries.
