It’s also famous for Cheyenne Frontier Days, which is held every summer and draws thousands of tourists from around the world. Cheyenne Frontier Days

One of Cheyenne’s most beloved attractions is Cheyenne Frontier Days, the world’s largest outdoor rodeo and western celebration. Since 1897, the festival has attracted western enthusiasts from across the globe, and some of the best rodeo performers in the country. There are all kinds of rodeo events to enjoy including bull riding, cattle roping, bareback riding, and steer wrestling. You can also enjoy non-rodeo activities like air shows, carnival games, amusement park rides, and tons of great food, including an authentic chuckwagon cookoff! Furthermore, they have live music at night, and past concerts have included Aerosmith, Keith Urban, and Miranda Lambert!

History and Attractions

Cheyenne also has several intriguing museums that showcase the history of the city. The Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum takes you through the history of the iconic festival from the early days to the present. The museum features an impressive collection of western artifacts, including one of the most extensive collections of old-fashioned carriages west of the Mississippi.

The Wyoming State Museum is also worth a visit and is free to the public. They have a wide variety of exhibits highlighting Wyoming state history, art, and wildlife. Another museum to check out is the Cheyenne Depot Museum, which details the city’s extensive history as a railroad town and a major stop on the Union Pacific Railroad. The museum is in the original Union Pacific depot building. Union Pacific decided to donate the building to the city in 1993. It’s also a national historic landmark and houses a brewpub.

In addition, the Cheyenne Big Boots are a popular attraction and make great Instagram photos. The boots are displayed at various locations around the city and were painted by local artists. These unique works of art were made possible by The Cheyenne Depot Museum Foundation in collaboration with the Downtown Development Authority, and each boot is 8 feet tall. Outdoor Recreation

Cheyenne is just a hop, skip, and a jump away from some outstanding parks and natural areas. Curt Gowdy State Park is just 25 miles west of town and is an outdoor playground for locals and tourists alike. The park has three large reservoirs that are perfect for swimming, boating, and fishing. Furthermore, the landscape is dotted with rock formations ideal for climbing and bouldering. Also, there are over 35 miles of trails great for hiking and mountain biking.

Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest is another scenic spot to visit and offers year-round recreation opportunities. In the summer, go hiking or camping in the Snowy Range Mountains. In the winter, ski or snowboard at fantastic ski areas like Snowy Range and Steamboat Springs, CO. With over 3 million acres of wilderness to explore, it’s easy to find a scenic hike or a quiet overlook to enjoy some serenity in nature.

Southeast of Cheyenne, Pawnee National Grassland is a great place to escape into nature in between your nursing shifts. The area is home to many unique species of high plains animals and is a haven for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts. Lark Buntings, Burrowing Owls, and Prairie Dogs are just a few of the different animals you’ll find here. Other popular activities in the grasslands include hiking, horseback riding, and stargazing. Rocky Mountain National Park is another popular tourist destination, and is less than 2 hours from Cheyenne. Enjoy over 350 miles of hiking trails, or take a scenic drive on the Trail Ridge Road, one of America’s highest paved roads at 12,000 ft. elevation.

Day Trips

There are several fun day trips you and your fellow travel nurses can take from Cheyenne if you’re looking to explore the region further. The town of Laramie is less than an hour west of the city and nestled between two mountain ranges. Laramie is home to the University of Wyoming, which gives the city a laid-back college-town vibe. The historic downtown is brimming with local curios, art galleries, street murals, and delectable restaurants. You can also enjoy some of Wyoming’s best nightlife, with everything from traditional bars and brewpubs, to western-themed saloons with line and swing dancing!

Fort Collins, CO is another fun college town about an hour south of Cheyenne. The city is home to Colorado State University, and is a mecca for outdoor recreation. Hiking, Mountain Biking, and kayaking are all popular activities. Fort Collins also has a vibrant downtown area, and is a regional leader in the craft brewing industry, and produces over 70% of the state’s craft beer. Cheyenne has a diverse selection of restaurants and libation stations to choose from. Enjoy a juicy handcrafted burger from 2 Doors Down, located in a historic building in the heart of downtown.
