5 Ways to Celebrate Halloween During COVID-19
Halloween may look different for a lot of us this year. COVID-19 numbers are on the rise, so traditional Halloween activities like costume parties, and indoor haunted houses may be cancelled this year. Don’t you fret! Keeping CDC guidelines in mind, you can still have a fun and safe Halloween during COVID-19. Here are 5 ways to lift those spirits!
1. Socially-Distanced Trick or Treating
Despite the CDC labeling trick-or-treating as a high risk activity, it’s inevitable that many will still take part in this beloved Halloween tradition. So here are some tips on how to lower your risk if you interact with trick-or-treaters this year.
Wear a Mask – This is the most effective way to limit transmission, and the most important thing that you can do to keep you and your family safe. Keep a mask near your front door, so you’ll always have it handy when you hand out candy, and make sure your kids mask up when they’re going door to door. There are several websites where you can order fun and scary Halloween-themed masks, and you can incorporate it into your costume!

Avoid Direct Contact With Trick-or-Treaters – If you can, try and maintain six feet of distance, and avoid direct contact with trick-or-treaters. The CDC recommends handing out treats outdoors, or setting up a station with individually bagged candy for kids to take. Many people are getting creative with handing out candy this year. One Ohio man created a candy chute leading from his porch to the sidewalk to ensure social distancing!
Wash Your Hands and Use Hand Sanitizer – If you’re going trick-or-treating, bring hand sanitizer with you and use it after you visit each house. Also, wash your hands or wear gloves when handing out candy, and make sure your kids wash their hands before digging into their candy hoard.
2. Halloween Movie Night
A Halloween movie marathon is a great way to get into the spirit at home. There are dozens of great Halloween movies ranging from scary and gory to family-oriented. Popular favorites include Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Halloween, The Shining, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Beetlejuice, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and many more! You can also make delicious Halloween-themed snacks for your movie night like Mummy Meatballs or Boo-scotti!
3. Outdoor Halloween Activities
You can still stay safe while participating in Halloween-themed activities outdoors. The CDC says it’s still ok to visit the pumpkin patch, but hay and wagon rides are not recommended. Scary attractions like haunted corn mazes are ok too, as long as they’re outdoors and adhere to proper social distancing guidelines. One activity the CDC recommends is organizing a neighborhood scavenger hunt instead of trick-or-treating. It’s also fun to walk around the neighborhood and see all the cool Halloween decorations on people’s houses. No matter what you choose, make sure you wear a mask if you’re going to be around crowds.
4. Booing
Booing is a fun tradition that’s perfect for Halloween during COVID-19! You leave an annoymous gift or bag of treats on your friend or neighbor’s porch and ring the doorbell. It’s kind of like ding-dong ditching except less mischievous, and it’s a great way to spread some Halloween cheer! The goal is to start a chain reaction of booing. Leave a funny note like “You’ve Been Boo’d!” and if you’ve been booed, you have to boo someone else.
5. Virtual Halloween Activities
Organizing Halloween activities online allows you to hang out with your friends while staying and home. You can do a Halloween Costume Contest through Zoom or Skype, and create different categories like funniest, scariest, or most original costume. You can video chat while you carve pumpkins, tell ghost stories, or show off your awesome Halloween decorations. Try playing some Halloween games like murder mysteries or scary movie trivia. You can even plan a murder mystery party through Zoom for your friends and family!
