Travel Nurse of the Month – Kelly D!

Name: Kelly D.

City, State: Sacramento, CA

Specialty: L&D

Month: July 1

1.  How’d you get into travel nursing?

I have always thought about nursing as a career during my college years. I first heard about traveling nurses about 10 years ago and fell in love with the idea of traveling around the country and getting paid for it. When I actually made it into the world of nursing, I couldn’t wait to work for a couple of years so I could begin my adventures. After 4 years of working and establishing complacency with my job I met an amazing man, fell in love, and we began to live out my dreams a few months after getting engaged! I can’t think of a better way to experience the world and get paid doing it!

2.  What’s the best part about traveling?

Because nursing is a high demand career, finding a job almost anywhere you desire is attainable. Exploring a new area of the country every 3 months is by far the best way to get lost in new cultures and environments you never knew existed. Travel nursing allows for a flexible schedule and time off in between assignments for personal adventures, or just some time off for yourself. Another perk to travel nursing is the financial compensation. Getting paid to travel is a great benefit of the job; you have the opportunity to make even more money than you probably ever imagined. Goals of paying off your student loans, saving for a house and/or wedding expenses become much easier with the extra income.

3.  You meet a first time travel nurse in the Sacramento area, which restaurant is a must for them to try?

Sacramento offers so many different restaurants to choose from depending on your taste and sense of adventure. I have found an Indian restaurant located just outside of Sacramento in North Natomas called Indian Oven that I can’t get enough of. Great service and delicious food for any time of the day. Another newfound favorite breakfast restaurant is called The Waffle Experience.  They offer a creative breakfast menu and food to die for!

4. What’s the best part about the Sacramento area?

Living in Sacramento has been an awesome experience for me so far. If you are the adventure/outdoors type, you will find endless things to explore in this area. The beaches are only about 2 hours west of Sacramento. While you’re in this area, you can visit San Francisco and the surrounding Bay area. Wine tasting in the Napa Valley is it’s own experience that is also under 2 hours away. It makes for a  great day trip. If you want to hike or camp, you only have to travel about a half hour for some amazing hiking locations. The American River runs through this area and allows for gorgeous hiking views and other adventures such as white water rafting, tubing, canoeing, and paddle boarding. Lake Tahoe, Big Tree National Park and Yosemite National Park are a few musts that are within a days drive if you’re feeling adventurous.

5.  Any advice for other travelers?

You can never talk to too many travelers about their experience in travel nursing. There are various forums, blogs and social media groups out there. Get on a few of those and just ask others about struggles they have acquired along their journey. For me, I found that housing was a little bit more cumbersome to find on your own rather than letting the agency assign you a residence. A 3 month lease was a bit of a challenge to find in a big city, but totally worth the search. Take the time to find your own housing that suits your living style. Reach out to VRBO, craigslist and others like this for short term leasing. By taking the living stipend and finding your own housing, you will be able to maximize your income.

6.  How do you compare Axis to others travel companies?

Axis doesn’t compare to other companies! This company is very professional and just as excited about your job opportunities as you are. With their punctuality and professionalism, you will surely get the dream job you have always wanted. The staff at Axis makes you feel like family. They will answer all of your questions promptly and go above and beyond to help you get settled with your new job. Before I started traveling, I had been talking to several other companies for about a year. When it came time to get a job I was unable to get an interview with 2 other companies. Axis had me a job within one week of my application. Choosing to sign a contract with this company was one of the best decisions I’ve made!

Congrats Kelly! We’re so glad you joined to the Axis team! 🙂
